MONTEVIDEO - An 18-year-old Montevideo woman is dead after being stabbed multiple times in the parking lot of a restaurant in Montevideo Friday night.

Montevideo Police identified her as Vinessa Lozano.

Police were called at about 8:45 p.m. Friday to the Pizza Ranch, where a stabbing was reported. Officers who responded found the victim lying in the parking lot and a suspect standing over her with a knife. The suspect was ordered at gunpoint to put down the knife, which he did, authorities said.

Lozano was taken by ambulance to the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital, where she died. A spokesman for the Montevideo Police said she had sustained at least 30 stab wounds.

The suspect, 24-year-old Darek Jon Nelson of Montevideo, is being held in jail in Granite Falls pending the filing of formal charges in court.

Because of the Martin Luther King holiday on Monday, he likely won't make his first court appearance until Tuesday, according to police.

A police spokesman said officers are continuing their investigation today, conducting more interviews and compiling reports.

Both the victim and suspect were employees at the Pizza Ranch restaurant, police said.
