Police spokeswoman Cyndi Barrington says it appears the child was with his father outside a home on the city's north side. Barrington says the father reported hearing a bang and then noticing his son had been hit.
The child was in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center.
No suspect was in custody and Barrington says a motive was not known.
