Despite a 7 a.m. start, the temp already neared 80 degrees, with a similar humidity, for the 39th annual Green Lake Road Race Saturday in Spicer. These runners, a half-mile into the 12-mile race on Lake Avenue South, will be shaded from the hot sun much of the first five miles, from left: Jared and Harley Anez of Willmar, Krysta Tanico (125) of Minneapolis, Katrina Balvance, second from right, of Rosemount and Kelsey Frank (26) of Battle Lake. SPICER — As one runner, drenched by sweat, commented after a 12-mile spin around Green Lake Saturday: “I guess this is what we should expect in July.”

It was 76 degrees and muggy at 7 a.m. when 259 runners departed Saulsbury Beach on Lake Avenue South for the 39th running of a nearly half-marathon.

Thomas Myers, 32, of Mankato took more than eight minutes off his fifth-place time of a year ago to place first overall in a time of 1:11.24. A year ago it was hotter, 82 degrees, and times overall lagged.

Women’s champion, Bri Rohne, 29, of St. Paul finished in 1:24.51. That was nearly six minutes better than her time a year ago when she placed fourth.

The 259 finishers were 18 more than a year ago and just six fewer than the largest field over the past six years of 265 in 2011 when the mercury was at 65 degrees for the start.

“Thanks to the many nice people who sprinkled us with cool water along the way,” said Rohne, a New London-Spicer graduate who didn’t start running until after college (Her sister Tia Nowacki ran on the Wildcats’ state champion cross country teams).

Rohne ran a 3:27 at her third Boston Marathon in April, coming in well before the carnage at the finish line.

This was her third Green Laker and the first for her dad, Edward Nowacki, 58, of Spicer, who finished in just over two hours.

Former Benson Braves athlete Samantha Goff, 19, of Danvers was second, 3:40 back of Rohne. Susan Engelhart, a Willmar native who lives in Jordan, placed third for a second straight year.

Myers ran for Shakopee High and then St. John’s. He competes on the Collegeville Track and Field Club in USATF races. His wife Jennifer placed 15th in the female division. Her parents have a place on the lake.

Runner-up Ben Burgett of Spicer, who recently turned 17, led Mile 1 through 7 before Myers took over. Burgett was 1:08 back.

Myers commented on the youngster’s effort: “That’s impressive for someone that young to do so well in a long race like this.”

After that, it was a four-minute gap before Chris Goebel, 34, of Duluth made the finish in 1:16.27. Joe Buckentine, 50, of St. Cloud shows no sign of slowing down. Always a top finisher here, he was fourth a second year in a row. Another teenager, Nick Shaleen, 15, finished in fifth; he runs for Wayzata High Trojans, the boys Class AAA True Team state champions.

The next race in the Glacial Lakes Championship Series is the 4-mile Watercade Lake Ripley Run at 7 a.m. Saturday at Litchfield.
