MARSHALL -- Michael Busack scored 29 points as the Redwood Valley Cardinals held off Montevideo 48-46 Saturday afternoon in the Mustangs gym at Southwest Minnesota State for the 3AA-North championship.
The defending section champs, now 26-1, advance to Thursday's final back in Marshall.
Montevideo's Jake Douglas got off a shot to tied from the lane as time ran out but the ball caromed off.
With Monte (18-9) up 44-42, Busack scored inside and then added a 3-point play for a 47-44 lead. Brett Bergeson made two free throws to close the gap to one, 47-46.
Redwood ran the clock down to 40 seconds when a foul sent Alec Koster to the line. He missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Douglas rebounded. Bergeson drove inside for the go-ahead shot attempt, missed and the rebound came off into a scrum of bodies. A foul was called with 17 seconds left and Redwood's Steven Runkel made the first and missed the second.
After a time out, Monte set up a last play, freeing Douglas for a moment just inside the free throw line. His shot came off the rim to Busack and Monte's Kyle TeBeest simultaneously. Another foul was called sending Busack to the line with one-tenth of a second on the clock; it mattered not that he missed at the other end as the 6-foot-4 Minnesota State Mankato recruit finished two points off his season average of 27.
Koster was next for the Cards with 8 points.
Douglas scored 12, Bergeson 11 and Colton Vien 10 to lead the Hawks, who were 0-for-10 the first half from outside the 3-point arc and 3 of 18 for the game.
Other than that, the Hawks were sharp, committing only three turnovers and making 9-of-10 at the free throw line.
