ACGC takes boys title with 53-46 win over CMCS

GRANITE FALLS - Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City claimed the Old 212 Conference Holiday Tournament title after using six 3-pointers in the first half to beat Central Minnesota Christian 53-46 Saturday.

The Falcons (4-2) were 6-for-10 from beyond the arc in the first half to build up a 30-18 lead at halftime. Micah Nordin and Justin Schroeder both hit two treys, while Josh Cunningham and Michael Martin each connected in the first half.

Martin led all scorers with 17 points while also piling up five assists and four steals. Nordin added 16 points and Schroeder followed with 13 while also grabbing seven rebounds.

The Bluejays were paced by Eric Groen's 14 points. Shean Gerdes followed with nine points as CMCS was handed its first loss.

In the three-point shootout, Zach Thissen of MACCRAY beat out four other participants to claim the title, hittng 10 three-pointers in 45 seconds.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (3-2) had 11 players score while limiting Chad Mulder, RCW's leading scorer, to just six points. Mulder had scored 37 and 30 points in the previous two games.

The Jaguars (3-4) got 11 points apiece from Andy Erickson, Mitch Schwindt and Brent Jansen. RCW shot 31 percent from the field while the Panthers fired at a 59-percent clip. Gary Knott paced the balanced TMB attack with 18 points.

Kenton Jonson, a 6-4 junior forward, had a career-high 28 points and 17 rebounds to led YME to the consolation crown.

Luke Berg added 24 points, six assists and five points for the Sting (5-1).

Jared Johnson had 19 points and seven rebounds for KMS (5-2). Jason Fernholz added 15 points, Nate Schlagel 14 and Justin Johnson 13.

MACCRAY (2-4) used a 23-point run at the beginning of the second half to climb out of a two-point deficit at halftime.

Senior 6-5 post Matt Condon pumped in a game-high 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to ignite the Wolverines. Andrew Meyer followed with 10 points.

Bret Neubauer's double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds sparked BOLD (0-5). Justin Fahse had 12 points and Jacob Brustuen 11.

Benson clips Paynesville for title

BENSON - Joey Fragodt scored 11 of his game-high 18 points late in the game and Benson was 12-for-14 at the free-throw line in the second half to beat Paynesville 70-64 in the championship game of the Case IH Holiday Tournament Saturday.

The game was knotted at 33-all at halftime, but the unbeaten Braves (4-0) were 15 of 18 at the free-throw line while Paynesville (2-3) was only 3 of 5 for the game.

The Bulldogs did own a 10-point lead with about nine minutes remaining, but Benson eventually fought back and grabbed the lead with two minutes left led by Fragodt, who was named MVP of the tournament. Fragodt also amassed five assists and five steals.

Cory Nietfeld notched a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds and also had five assists and three steals to pace the Bulldogs. Aaron Braun added 17 points and Derek Stanger 13 while Ben Moser grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Braves also got 18 points from Daniel Fragodt and 10 points each from Tyler Guest and Jesse Holm.

Justin Daly and Lucas Claassen both had 10 points to pace a balanced Spartans' attack. Nate Vold had three 3-pointers for nine points and Corey Quackenbush added eight points.

Nick Giese had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Owls (1-4). Tanner Gramm followed with 14 and Nate Holleman handed out 10 assists and made two steals for Hancock (1-4).

VanderVelde, Paulson lead LQPV

MADISON - Adam Paulson went 6-for-7 from three-point range in the first half and Brady VanderVelde netted 17 points in the second half to help Lac qui Parle Valley top Lake Benton 78-75 in a non-conference game Saturday.

Lake Benton (4-1) sufferened its first loss despite hitting 14 3-pointers.

VanderVelde, who was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line in the second half, finished with 25 points and Paulson 19 as the Eagles capitalized on second chances. VanderVelde also notched 11 rebounds and three blocks while R.J. Strand had another double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds.
