WILLMAR — Affiliated Community Medical Centers announced plans Tuesday to build an outpatient ambulatory surgery center on the northeast corner of the new ACMC-Marshall clinic on Carlson Street.

The ambulatory surgery center, also known as an outpatient surgery center or same-day surgery center, will focus on providing same-day surgical care.

It will consist of 10,000 square feet, including two operating suites, two endoscopic suites and pre-operative and post-operative recovery areas, waiting rooms, consultation areas, and support space.

Same-day procedures will be offered at the facility in multiple specialties, including general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, gastroenterology, otolaryngology, urology, ophthalmology and podiatry.

A similar ambulatory surgery center owned as part of a joint venture with ACMC and Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar currently performs over 8,000 outpatient procedures each year.

“Advancements in medical technology and innovative surgical techniques, as well as managed care cost considerations, have all led to major reductions in procedures requiring an inpatient stay," said Terry Tone, administrator of ACMC. “The new ACMC-Marshall Surgery Center will help us continue to provide access to coordinated, quality services needed by our patients while preserving choice and lowering cost to our patients.”

To ensure the optimal design for patients, the plan for a new surgery center was developed through a comprehensive process that included review of and site visits to various regional surgery centers and the involvement and input of ACMC physicians.

“This surgery center will be a wonderful addition to the services that are already available to patients in Marshall and the surrounding communities,” said Dr. Jacob Juta, a general surgeon at ACMC in Marshall. The expansion of surgical services in Marshall will give area residents additional options as they make health care decisions, he said.

Groundbreaking for the new facility will begin this summer. The project will take approximately one year to complete.

ACMC recently completed the construction of a brand-new medical clinic in Marshall. The grand opening was held last week.
