Aileen Agnes Hermann Elkington died Sunday, March 2, 2014 at the age of 97. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Montevideo. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church.

Aileen was born on a farm near Georgetown, MN on September 3, 1916. She was the oldest of six children born to John Hermann and Mary Denery Hermann. Aileen graduated from Cathedral High School in St. Cloud at the age of 16. She received her degree as a registered nurse from St. Johns Hospital in Fargo, ND on July 1, 1937. On August 24, 1939, she married Aubrey Elkington after meeting while they both worked at the State Hospital in Fergus Falls, MN. In 1947, they moved to Montevideo and opened the family business "Electric Motor Service." Aileen worked as an RN for many years at the Montevideo Hospital and Luther Haven Nursing Home. She volunteered for the American Blood Mobile and was a founding and consistent board member of Good Food Buyers Co-op during the 1980s. She was a member of the Rosary Society and was the treasurer for the St. Joseph Board of Education. She was also an active member of the Montevideo Ecumenical Society. Reading, gardening, sewing and having a cat sit on her lap, were lifelong interest of Aileens.

Her seven children and their families survive her: Daughter, Pat Larson of Coon Rapids, her son Steve & Nancy Larson and their children, Zachary & Brooke; Daughter, Penny Elkington of Montevideo; Son, Bob and (Colleen) Elkington of Park Rapids and their children, Kimberly (and Clay), Michael (and Jami), Jennifer Aileen (and Chris) & Kortlyn, Jessica (and Cody) & Kyra & Ellie; Daughter, Kathy and (Jack) Hendrickson of Montevideo; Daughter, Reenie Elkington of Alexandria; Daughter, Bo and (Scott) Spletter of Wadena and their children, Dustan and Lauree, Trey & MaKayla and Samantha Spletter; Son, Tim and (Shelly) Elkington of Montevideo and their children Casey Schulte & Zack Schulte. Also Juana Quintana (AFS student 1970-1971). She is also survived by her brother-in-law Lenard Cooley of Lake Charles, LA and sisters-in-law, Tootie Hermann of Bonners Ferry, ID and Dorothy Elkington of Grand Rapids, MN and many nieces and nephews.

Aileen was preceded in death by her husband Aubrey, who died in 1997, her parents, two brothers, three sisters and three sons-in-law: Jack Pehrson, Delane Larson, and Hank Christenson.

Since 2007, Aileen made her home at the Clara City Care Center. She will be remembered by her family, friends and those she worked with as a caring, gentle, and insightful person and for her beautiful, gentle smile. Like her husband, Aileen chose to donate her body to the Mayo Medical School Program. God bless her soul.
