WILLMAR -- Mary Hanson, the Willmar Cardinals head coach, had a question for her counterpart from Alexandria after the visiting Cardinals had smashed her team 25-12, 25-14, 25-11.

"How come," she asked Becky Anderson, "you're only rated No. 11?"

Anderson just smiled.

In a match that took about 80 minutes Tuesday, Alexandria pretty much determined the outcome of the Central Lakes Conference race.

Both teams had come in 7-0 in the CLC, but Alexandria was clearly better. Alexandria has nine of 10 starters back from a year ago when they tied for first with St. Cloud Tech.

"There's no holes in their defense and they have a great block," said Hanson. "They run the fastest offense by far in the conference of the teams we've seen."

Alexandria improved to 8-0 -- having not lost a single game yet in a conference match -- and 14-4 overall.

Alexandria's serve-receive didn't allow Willmar an ace serve all match.

"The score was lopsided," added Hanson, "but actually we played well. We had to elevate our game to match their pace."

Attacker Emily Nelsen got through for five kills, but no one else had more than two. Kelsey Evans had three ace blocks, Brittney Hastad eight digs and Jennie Mattison four set assists.

Sam Dale's 13 kills led the Alexandria front line. Kate Brown served up five aces.

Willmar is at Rocori Thursday, then will host an eight-team invite on Saturday.
