According to Peterson Brothers Funeral Home of Willmar, the funeral service for Buchanan will be at 11 a.m. April 30 at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar.

Buchanan took on whatever came his way and was a hard worker, according to retired District Judge John Lindstrom, who worked with Buchanan in the Eighth Judicial District.

"He maintained a great sense of humor," Lindstrom said, adding that he admired Buchanan's ability to keep a sense of balance in his life while handling the difficult issues that are commonly part of court proceedings.

"I admired him," Lindstrom said. "He was a good guy and will be missed."

According to Tribune archives, Buchanan began his career in December 1964 as a municipal court judge. He became a judicial officer, serving in that capacity until February 1977 when he was appointed County Court Judge. In 1987, he was named District Court Judge when the trial courts were merged.
