LITCHFIELD -- Allan Wendell Nelson, 80, of Litchfield died Thursday at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.
The service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Burial will be at Lake Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield and one hour before the service at the church.
He was born Jan. 8, 1929, in Litchfield to Nels and Anna (Martinson) Nelson. He grew up and received his education in Litchfield, graduating from Litchfield High School in 1946.
He married Janice Peterson on June 29, 1952, in Ringsted, Iowa. He worked at Thompson Yards Lumber Company in Litchfield before moving to Armstrong, Iowa, and later to LuVerne, Iowa, where he was a manager.
He returned to Litchfield to manage Thompson Yards, which he purchased in 1956. He partnered with Charlie Anderson and Cavour Justus to create Ideal Lumber in Litchfield. He later bought out his partners and continued to own and operate Ideal Lumber until retiring in 2003.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and served on several boards and committees. He was a member of the Litchfield Masons, the Shriners, the Litchfield Fire Department and Litchfield Industries.
He is survived by his wife; children: Brent (and Kim) Nelson of Litchfield, Brad Nelson of Litchfield, and Blake (and Kris) Nelson of Eden Prairie; five grandchildren; and one brother: Lloyal (and Lois) Nelson of Litchfield.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
