Allen Engstrom June 22, 1954 - Jan. 7, 2013
OLIVIA - Allen Engstrom, age 58, of Olivia died Monday, January 7, 2013 at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia. Mass of Christian Burial is Friday 10:30 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia with Rev. Paul van de Crommert as celebrant. Burial is in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Olivia VFW and American Legion. Visitation is Thursday from 5-8 p.m. ending with a prayer service at 8:00 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia. Visitation continues Friday from 9:15-10:15 a.m. at the funeral home.
Allen Lee Engstrom was born June 22, 1954 at Willmar, MN to Alvin and Louise (Nieuwbeerta) Engstrom. He grew up in the Danube and Renville area and attended school in Renville and Danube school districts. Al served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1971-1974 including being in Viet Nam. He married Cheryl Erickson on January 6, 1973 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia and they were blessed with four children. Al and Cheryl made their home in Olivia and he was a lifelong trucker. He had worked for Hillemeier Brothers and North Central Gas Co., and then owned and operated his own truck hauling for Farm Service Elevator before becoming an over the road truck driver for R.T.A. Trucking, and B & B Procurement. The past 16 years he worked for Fortune Transportation of Windom. Al had been a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, the American Legion, the Patriot Riders, and Highway Watch. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, motorcycling, and stock car racing. He also enjoyed listening to BOLD football games, watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, hauling sugar beets, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Allen is survived by his wife, Cheri Engstrom; his four children: Shannon (and Gary) Marotzke of Vesta, Sarah (and Steve) Maurice of Marshall, Stacey (and Matt) Wahl of Walnut Grove and Steve (and Jessica) Engstrom of Olivia; his ten grandchildren: Garrett and Gavin Marotzke, Jaden, Erza and Deagen Maurice, Natalie and Natasha Wahl, Matthew Dooner, and Mykia and Madyson Engstrom; his two sisters: Ruth Linde and Alma (and Herb) Wallert; his brother Dave Engstrom (and special friend Emily Haney); his mother-in-law; Arlene Erickson; his two sisters-in-law: Sue (and Dan) Elliott and Cindy (and Al) Grosklags; his three brothers-in-law: Greg (and Karen) Erickson, Bob (and Sue) Erickson and Doug (and Brenda) Erickson along with many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Allen was preceded in death by his parent and his sister Caroline Behrens.
