Alvin A. Balas March 20, 1920 - Oct. 18, 2008
BENSON -- Alvin Andrew Balas, 88, of Benson, died Saturday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Benson. Burial will be in the Six Mile Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.
He was born March 20, 1920, in Jackson to Andrew and Marie (Stebrick) Balas. He grew up on a farm southeast of Danvers in Swenoda Township. He attended the Agricultural School in Morris. He served U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 driving a halftrack with the Fifth Armored Division throughout Europe. After he was discharged he returned to the family farm until 1982 when he retired. He moved to Benson in 1996. He was a member of Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Danvers and St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Benson at the time of his death.
He is survived by a brother-in-law: Orin (and Margaret) Ellingson of Benson; a sister-in-law: Jo Anne Balas of Hazen, N.D.; and nieces and nephews including: Rodney (and Linda) Ellingson of Benson and Jean Ellingson (and Dean) Johnson of Starbuck.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
