Amateur Baseball: Atwater edges No. 1 Lakers in County Line playoffs
SUNBURG -- Atwater survived giving up seven runs in the first inning by keeping the top-seeded Norway Lake-Sunburg Lakers scoreless for the final six innings as the No. 2 Chuckers edged NLS 10-9 Sunday in the second round of the County Line League playoffs.
The third round is scheduled for a pair of 1:30 p.m. games on Saturday. Atwater hosts No. 5 Paynesville and the Lakers will host No. 6 Starbuck. The two winners will then meet the following day at 11 a.m. in Spicer. No. 4 New London-Spicer hosts two games this Sunday with the championship game at 3 p.m.
The title game entrants qualify for the Region 15C tournament.
With two outs in the top half of the 10th inning Jacoby Anderson, the winning pitcher, reached on an error. Brian Kingery followed with a double to right-center to allow pinch runner Ryan Walsh to score standing up and break the 9-9 tie.
Already having sent NLS down 1-2-3 in the ninth, Anderson performed the same feat in the 10th to a seven-inning relief stint. Anderson struck out six while giving up just five hits and one walk.
The Chuckers tied the game at 9-9 in the seventh behind Matt Tanner's two-run double and NLS starter Chris Braaten's wildness. Braaten walked two and hit two other batters in the frame before being yanked off the mound with two outs in favor of Grant Johnson.
Braaten issued seven walks and surrendered nine hits and nine earned runs. Despite not walking a batter and giving up just two hits in 3.1 innings of work, Johnson was tagged with the loss.
The Lakers started out on fire by sending up 11 batters to the plate in the first to manufacture seven runs. Braaten, Aaron Zimmer and Jared Johnson supplied RBI singles before Jonah Johnson capped the scoring with a two-run double.
Zimmer singled in another two runs in the fourth, but the Lakers weren't able to produce any other offense en route to falling into the loser's bracket.
Kingery and Tanner had three hits each to help Atwater outhit NLS 11-9. Jonah Johnson also had three hits for the Lakers.
