WILLMAR — The Willmar Rails and Bullfrogs from Bird Island each had a four-run frame and a three-run inning, but Bird Island also had a two-run inning as the Bullfrogs went home with a 9-7 Cornbelt League win Sunday.
The Rails put up four runs in the first after the first eight in the lineup visited the plate. A Bird Island error loaded the bases and then Jordan Ruter cleared them with a three-run double before scoring on Lane Kleist’s sacrifice fly.
But Willmar was held scoreless for the next seven innings before producing three runs in the ninth.
In between the drought Bird Island scored twice in the third, four times in the fourth and three times in the top half of the ninth. Andy Dollerschell put the Bullfrogs on the board with a two-run double in the third and two Willmar errors helped them go up 6-4 in the fourth.
Eight Bullfrogs batted in the ninth and after two quick outs, a walk and three straight singles from Jeremy Mortenson, Elliot Serbus and Dylan Gass stretched their lead to 9-4.
The Rails then rallied in the bottom half to cut the lead to two, but Brad Gass induced a 5-3 groundout to end the game and earn a save in Jesse Bjur’s victory.
Dollerschell finished with three hits and Tyler Hebrink and Andrew Brooks added two more each to power the Bullfrogs’ 12-hit attack.
Willmar manufactured 13 hits with Matt Stock and Adam Fagerstrom producing three each.
