Amateur Baseball: Granite Falls tips Rails in 12th, 2-1

GRANITE FALLS -- Granite Falls' Cam Vien stroked a single to score Brandon Bjelland and give the Kilowatts a 2-1 win over Willmar in Cornbelt South League amateur baseball action Sunday.

Granite Falls (8-5, 9-7) picked up two walks and Bjelland took third on a fly ball out in the 12th inning before scoring on the base hit.

The Rails (7-7, 7-7) scored their only run with a bases-loaded walk to Jordan Olson in the top of the sixth inning.

The Kilowatts scored the game's first run on a solo home run from Jake Suter in the fifth.

Curt Kvam picked up the victory in relief, pitching the last 3Xc innings. He gave up three hits and struck out six.

Matt Sagedahl and Matt Carlson had two hits each for Willmar.

The Rockets pounded out 11 hits and rode the arm of starting pitcher Tom DeBoer to their 12th win against Cornbelt competition.

Tyler Steen cracked two-out, two-run doubles in both the third and the fifth innings. He also singled. Brandon Larson also had three hits and Mike Jeseritz a pair.

DeBoer was extra sharp. He issued no walks, allowed five hits and fanned nine Islanders over seven innings. Zach Nelson pitched the last two innings, both hitless.

Raymond is 12-2 in league and 21-4 overall.

Shawn Dollerschell and Mitch Maxwell had two hits each for Bird Island (2-11, 5-13).

Chris Braaten of Norway Lake-Sunburg silenced the Regal batting order with a three hitter on Sunday at Regal.

Braaten, who had a short stint in June with the Border Cats of the Northwoods League, walked one Eagle and fanned 10.

The win raised the Cornbelt North leaders' record to 8-5 with two games left. Regal dropped to 6-7.

The Lakers got their runs on bases-loaded walks in the third inning off Chris Beier and in the sixth off reliever Austen Hadley.

Jordan Johnson pushed in the other three runs with an RBI single in the third and a two-run double in the sixth, the latter bringing in Chad Searcy and Justin Johnson.

Beier and Hadley each allowed only three hits in four-plus innings but got hurt by issuing seven walks total.

The Snappers made a 3-0 lead after two innings stand as starter Ryan Schneider and reliever Josh Vontahl combined to hold the Blues to a single run in the sixth inning.

The Blues were coming off a 7-2 loss to the Eden Valley Hawks on Friday.
