Amateur Baseball: Milroy edges Bird Island
BIRD ISLAND — Two runs in the top half of the ninth inning allowed Milroy to edge Bird Island 6-5 Friday and force a winner-take-all game between the top-seeded Yankees and the Bullfrogs Sunday for the Cornbelt League playoffs title.
Milroy’s Matt Bauer doubled twice, singled drove in two runs and scored the tying run in the ninth after Micah Gronli drew a bases-loaded walk. The Yankees pulled ahead shortly later after a throwing error by the Bird Island catcher allowed Justin Schlemmer to come home.
The Bullfrogs threatened in the bottom half of the ninth, putting two runners on, but Mark Neubauer was picked off first by Schlemmer for the game’s final out.
Sunday’s title game is at 1:30 p.m. in Milroy.
Logan Swan singled three times to drive in a pair of runs and Neubauer scored twice for the No. 4 Bullfrogs.
Josh Hadley struck out three, including two in the ninth, in 2.1 innings of relief to collect the win.
