Amateur baseball: NLS Twins trip up Atwater

Tribune photo by Rand Middleton New London-Spicer Twins' catcher Scott Rambow has the ball in plenty of time to apply the tag on Atwater pitcher Justin Schroeder, who was trying to score from first on a JaColby Anderson double Friday in Spicer. The relay came from left fielder Mike Danielson to shortstop Jake Rambow.

SPICER — Tyler Horning’s two-run homer and near cycle and three more hits from winning pitcher Ben Kulset allowed New London-Spicer to edge Atwater 4-3 Friday and put the brakes on the Chuckers’ County Line League title drive.

A win Sunday afternoon at Regal in the regular-season finale would still give Atwater the league title. The Twins wrap up their regular season Sunday hosting Paynesville.

The Chuckers loaded the bases right away in the first after Michael Malvin walked and Josh Cunningham and Justin Schroeder singled. JaColby Anderson followed Schroeder’s hit with a double down the left-field line, allowing Malvin and Cunningham to score. Schroeder was determined to also score on the play, but NLS left fielder Mike Danielson fielded Anderson’s double and fired the ball in to Jake Rambow at short, who then relayed the throw to Twins catcher Scott Rambow who tagged out Schroeder about five feet up the third-base line.

Horning tied the game in the bottom half of the first with his two-run shot to left-center that also brought in Kevin Soine.

The Twins then got an RBI double from Danielson in the third and a 4-2 lead in the fourth on Jake Rambow’s groundout. The slim advantage held for Kulset to earn the win as Kulset worked into the ninth, scattering six hits and four walks while striking out two.

Atwater put runners on third and first in the ninth, thanks to Jeff Peterson’s double, to knock Kulset out, but Nathaniel Swoyer came in and struck out Cunningham to end the game.

Malvin got Atwater within one in the fifth with his double that drove in Cunningham.

Schroeder struck out seven and gave up four walks and 10 hits in seven innings to get tagged with the loss.
