The Lakers (10-4) secured a spot in the Region 15C playoffs last week, but Regal needed a 4-3 win over top-seeded New London-Spicer earlier in the day Sunday at Willie Reigstad Park to punch its ticket to the region tournament at Elrosa. Regal opens region play Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Lake Henry and NLS opens Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against New Munich.

A three-run homer from Aaron Zimmer gave NLS a quick 3-0 lead Sunday, but Regal scored the game’s next five runs to pull ahead. Chris Beier’s two-run single in the sixth and Austen’s Hadley RBI single in the seventh put the Eagles in front 5-3.

Two late errors then allowed NLS to rally. Chad Searcy’s RBI single was misplayed in right field in the seventh, allowing Justin Johnson to tie the game at 5-5, and Justin singled in the eighth to put NLS in front, but that hit was misplayed in left, allowing his brother Jonah Johnson to score.

Jonah proceeded to put Regal down in order in the ninth on two strikeouts and a groundout to end the game and a three-inning relief appearance that allowed him to earn the victory.

Regal outhit NLS 10-7, but its four errors allowed the Lakers to score six unearned runs. Hadley, Shane Radermacher and Jordan Beier had two hits each for Regal and Kyle Baker singled twice for NLS.

Regal 4, NL-Spicer 3

Right-handed pitcher Austen Hadley found a second wind in the late innings and the Eagles nudged the Twins with a run in the top of the 10th inning in the noon game Sunday at Willie Reigstad Park.

The victory reserved a place for Regal in the Region 15C Tournament, this year hosted by Elrosa at Saints Field.

In the top of the 10th on the windy, partly-sunny afternoon, former Marine Jordan Beier singled off Ben Kulset, the Twins’ starter. After a walk and an out, Austin Kampsen smacked a sharp single plating Beier for the go-ahead run.

Hadley got the Twins in order in the bottom of the 10th frame.

After Scott Rambow’s mighty double to the left-field fence that outdistance the glove of Eagles’ leftfielder Shane Radermacher to drive in two runs and tie the score 3-3 in the bottom of the eight, Hadley tapped his reserves and retired the next seven Twins in order, including the side in the ninth.

“He was tired but found a little bit more,” said his brother and the Eagles’ first baseman Goose Hadley. “When he struck out the side in the ninth, he said ‘Well, maybe I do have a little bit more to give.’”
