Amateur baseball roundup: Milroy, Raymond qualify for Class C tournament

BIRD ISLAND -- Raymond's Tyler Steen nearly hit for the cycle and Cornbelt champion Milroy outscored two opponents by 10 runs as both the Rockets and Yankees qualified for the Class C State Tournament during Region 11C play this past weekend.

Milroy doubled up St. Augusta 6-3 on Friday and Raymond upended the Cold Spring Rockies 5-2 Saturday afternoon to reach Sunday's winner's bracket semifinals. Milroy then hammered Bird Island 9-2 and Raymond outslugged Eden Valley 11-6 to assure themselves a spot in the expanded state tourney.

In other quarterfinal-round games Saturday, Bird Island blanked Kimball 3-0 and Eden Valley edged Watkins 4-2. Kimball then beat St. Augusta 5-2 and Watkins tripped up the Rockies 4-2 in the loser's bracket.

The Yankees and Rockets will play next Saturday at 4 p.m. in Bird Island for a spot in the region title game. There will also be three loser's bracket games Saturday; Eden Valley and Kimball at 11 a.m., Bird Island and Watkins at 1:30 p.m. and the winners at 6:30 p.m., which will determine the third state entrant from the region.

Semifinals

Milroy 9, Bird Island 2

A pair of four-run innings helped Milroy win its second game in three days.

Bird Island was held to six hits and struck out 12 times.

Milroy starter Nathan Duetz struck out nine and gave up five hits, two runs and two walks in eight innings to pick up the win.

Mark Neubauer supplied the lone offense for the Bullfrogs with a 4-3 groundout in the second and a single up the middle in the fourth. Neubauer's RBI single in the fourth cut Milroy's lead in half, but another four-run frame from the Yankees in the seventh put the game away.

Micah Gronli doubled to lead off the Yankee seventh and scored on Brian Dolan's single. A sacrifice from Chris Eichton moved Dolan to second and Dave Schmidt and Matt Bauer followed with singles to put Milroy up by four again. The inning was then capped by Justin Schlemmer's two-run homer.

A fast start put Raymond in the driver's seat and into the state tournament for the third straight year.

The Rockets sent up 11 batters to the plate in the first and got seven singles and a double from Justin Koenen to take a quick and commanding 6-0 lead. Jason Meyer had a two-run single in the frame.

The Rockets scored again in the second and fourth before Eden Valley plated six runs in the top half of the sixth to make things interesting. The Hawks threatened again in the seventh, but Zach Nelson came on in relief of Smith to get the last out with two runners on. Nelson then sent the Hawks down 1-2-3 in both the eighth and ninth.

Steen singled in the first, doubled in the fifth and tripled in the seventh to spark Raymond's 16-hit offense. Koenen, Meyer, Brandon Madsen, Mike Jeseritz and Kyle Knott added two hits each.

Dan Sargent and Joe Thiel both went 3-for-5 for Eden Valley.

Jesse Bjur, the first 7.1 innings and Brad Gass combined to blank Kimball and limited the Express to just three singles.

Bjur gave up the three hits and walked five, but he also struck out five and was aided by an errorless defense to pick up the win. Gass walked one and fanned one in his 1.2 innings of work to earn a save.

Elliot Serbus singled twice, stole two bases and knocked in a run to ignite the Bullfrogs' offense that was able to collect just five hits off two Kimball pitchers. However, Adam Theis, the losing pitching, and Andy Dingmann did issue seven walks.

Mark Neubauer added a double while Andy Dollerschell (single) and Luke Kramer (groundout) drove in one run apiece.

A three-run homer from Justin Koenen highlighted a four-run fourth inning for the Rockets, who first grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when Koenen singled in Jordan Smith.

Tyler Knott worked all nine on the mound and struck out 12 along the way to earn the win. He surrendered three walks and seven hits while both of the runs he gave up were earned. John Rossman, who also went the distance on the hill for the Cold Spring Rockies, singled in two runs in the eighth to break up Knott's shutout bid.

After Kyle Knott grounded out to short to start the Raymond fourth, Smith singled and moved over to third base when Jason Meyer reached on a Cold Spring error. Ron Hoekstra then singled in Smith and Koenen followed with a blast to left-center to give the Rockets a comfortable 5-0 lead.
