Amateur Baseball: Vien doubles, homers to power Montevideo past Appleton, 7-3

APPLETON -- Cameron Vien hit the first Montevideo amateur baseball home run in 22 years with a solo shot in the fourth inning as the Spartans defeated Appleton 7-3 in a Land 'O Ducks League game on Saturday.

Vien also hit a two-run double and finished with three RBI.

Travis Epema pitched into the ninth inning for the win. He allowed three runs on four hits, struck out four and walked six. James Gallagher got the final two outs.

Greg Rotunda hit a two-run single in the ninth to lead Appleton.

Andrew Simmonds' single in the eighth inning drove in the go-ahead run for the Chiefs.

Simmonds and Jake Erickson had two hits each.

Trent Radermacher and Travis Radermacher had two hits each for Rosen.

Joe Pennertz belted a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to give the Blues the win.

Sartell scored four times in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-5 lead.

Joe Buschette was hit by a pitch leading off the ninth for Litchfield. Gabe Lecher then doubled before Pennertz homers.

Litchfield, which had only nine players at the game, had 14 hits. Lecher and finished with three hits each, while Lucas Johnson and Kurt Gartner had two each.

Gartner worked the first 71/3 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs. Ed Estrada tossed the final 12/3 hitless innings for the win.

Three Sacred Heart pitchers combined to hold Montevideo to three hits in a seven-inning, shutout win.

Nate Hebrink pitched the first four innings for the win. He struck out eight and walked four. Adam Loe struck out all three batters in the fifth and Matt Koenen closed out the final two innings with four strikeouts.

Ryan Hebrink, Jeremy Hinderks and Nate Hebrink had two hits each for Sacred Heart.

Todd Bergeson, Tim Epema and Kyle Goslee each had one hit for the Spartans.
