Amateur Golf: Jacobson wins first 2 matches at Mid-Players' Championship
WACONIA — Willmar native Andy Jacobson won his first two matches Tuesday at the 7th Minnesota Golf Association Mid-Players’ Championship at Island View Golf Club to advance to the quarterfinals.
Jacobson, the tournament’s No. 2 seed representing Eagle Creek Golf Course, beat No. 31 Gary Lawson of Tanners Brook GC (Forest Lake) 4-and-3 in the opening round to advance to the round of 16 where he upended No. 18 Joel B. Johnson of The Links at Northfork (Ramsey) 5-and-4.
Jacobson posted four birdies, three bogeys and eight pars in his first match. The 33-year-old then pocketed three birdies and a par on the first four holes against Johnson on the way to securing the win on No. 14 with a par.
The quarterfinals start today at 8:02 a.m. with Jacobson’s match against No. 7 Scott Thomas of Bracketts Crossing CC (Lakeville) slated to get underway at 8:18 a.m. The semifinal matches follow at 12:46 p.m. and 12:54 p.m. and the final is Thursday at 7:40 a.m.
Jacobson lost in the semifinals last year at Dacotah Ridge in Morton after finishing second in 2011 at Olympic Hills GC in Eden Prairie.
Starting Monday Jacobson will be at Interlachen CC in Edina to defend his MGA Players’ Championship he won last year at Windsong Farm GC in Independence.
