On the Cash for Clunkers program:
Rarely has a federal government program turned into such a big hit with the public as quickly as the "cash-for-clunkers" car-buying plan.
No wonder. This is an economic stimulus program that actually accomplishes what it set out to do -- revive activity in a key sector of the moribund economy and, along the way, do some good for the environment and the American consumer. ...
According to the Obama administration, 80,500 vehicle transactions had been logged by the government's program through Saturday afternoon, not including a huge backlog. ...
As a result, the $1 billion allocated for the program by Congress was virtually all spent in four days. Knowing a good thing when they saw it, members of the House of Representatives added another $2 billion for the program ... before leaving for the annual summer recess.
The Senate should do the same before it begins its own recess. ...
It's a success. At a time when good economic news is all too rare, that's something to cheer.
