Area DAV chapter members to volunteer at Old Glory Run
COLD SPRING — Area members of Chapter 34 of the Minnesota Disabled American Veterans will be volunteering during the annual Old Glory Run beginning at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the Cold Spring baseball park.
Ken Olson of Paynesville, Chapter 34 commander, said members will be helping with registration, crossing guards, traffic control, water stations and other duties. Olson said members of other DAV chapters and non-members will also be volunteering.
The event is a fundraiser for the Minnesota Disabled American Veterans and is a salute to those who have served in the military. Olson said the event attracts on average more than 800 participants of all ages.
Registration is available online at theoldgloryrun.com or the day of the event.
The event features a 5K run-walk beginning at 10 a.m. and a 1K walk-run at 11 a.m. for participants age 12 and under. Freedom Flight will provide tethered hot-air balloon rides for a donation. Awards will be given at 11:30 a.m. Lunch and beverages will be available.
Olson said the national commander of the DAV, Joseph W. Johnston, will be attending the event.
Olson said the event will be held rain or shine but he’s hoping for shine. “I’ve been there, rain or shine, through it all,’’ he said.
