WILLMAR -- The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for most of the area for today.
Temperatures reaching the middle 80s to 90s, winds from 15 to 25 mph and low relative humidity are forecast to arrive today, bringing dangerous wildfire conditions this afternoon and evening across much of southern Minnesota.
Pope, Stearns, Lac qui Parle, Swift, Chippewa, Kandiyohi and Meeker counties are included in the National Weather Service's red flag warning, which will remain in effect through Tuesday evening. A red flag warning means that due to the strong winds and low relative humidity in the area, fast moving and intense grassland fires could occur.
Pope and Stearns counties have also been placed under burning restrictions by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. According to the DNR, receding snow cover has created conditions that are favorable for wildfire. While debris burning is banned by the restrictions, campfires smaller than 3 feet are allowed.
