Arraignments Monday for shooting suspects
WILLMAR -- The four men arrested for invading a home and firing shots on a Willmar Police officer Wednesday evening are expected to make their first court appearance Monday.
According to Kandiyohi County Attorney Boyd Beccue, the assistant county attorney handling the case sought an extension to delay the men's first appearance in district court to Monday. He called the investigation into the incident "extensive."
The men, Leroy Diaz Evans, 26, Adrian Salinas, 19, Arcadio Salinas, 23, all of Willmar, and Jesus Trevino, 33, of Arizona, remain in the Kandiyohi County Jail.
They were arrested Wednesday evening after multiple shots were fired on an officer, striking the headlight of the squad car, a stop sign and an occupied home along the 800 block of Second Street Southeast. Police recovered three handguns on the four men.
According to information from the Willmar Police, officers had been called to the area earlier in the day, around 4:40 p.m. by a citizen reporting a home invasion with two men entering a home brandishing handguns and looking for someone. The suspects left just before police arrived. Officers returned around 6:50 p.m. when a citizen again reported that men had entered the home wearing masks. An occupant of the home had been struck on the side of the head with the butt of a handgun.
The shots were fired on the police car as the officer pulled into a nearby parking lot. The suspects ran away, but were quickly captured. The victim of the assault was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital for medical attention.
