Arrest made in Swift County copper thefts
BENSON -- The Swift County Sheriff's Office arrested a suspect Thursday evening in connection with a series of recent burglaries in which copper and metal fittings were stolen from unoccupied vacant homes and abandoned farmyards.
Sheriff John Holtz said the suspect is being held in the Swift County Jail pending charges.
Copper water pipes, brass connections and electrical copper wiring were stripped during the burglaries, Holtz said in a news release Friday. Tools, auto parts, antiques and scrap metal also were stolen.
Holtz urged owners and caretakers of vacant property to conduct a check, and to call the Sheriff's Office if they discover anything missing or new damage. Similar burglaries have been reported in Chippewa, Big Stone, Lac qui Parle, Yellow Medicine and Lincoln counties.
The Swift County Sheriff's Office is holding several strands of electrical cords and other items and is seeking to locate the owners.
