Voice workshop Sunday in Willmar
WILLMAR -- Noted singer and playwright Ruth MacKenzie will lead a workshop, "Finding Your Voice," at 1 p.m. Sunday at Unitarian Universalist Church in Willmar.
This workshop is a time for self-reflection and exploration, sharing and storytelling, song and ritual, all confirming voice as the expression of one's essence in the world. The workshop has reportedly won accolades over the years from participants of the Shannon Institute: Renewing Community Leadership Program.
MacKenzie is an artist whose compass has taken her in many creative directions. Dubbed the "Janis Joplin of folk" by the Berkeley Express, she has performed concerts throughout the United States and the Nordic countries. She is sought after for her "exquisite interpretation" of lyrics and the many "textures of her rich alto" voice. Most recently, she was a featured performer with Garrison Keillor's, Prairie Home Companion, Peter Ostroushko's Heartland Band, and the touring show Gales of November with Prudence Johnson and Claudia Schmidt.
A freewill donation will be received.

Artaria String Quartet in Dawson
DAWSON -- The Artaria String Quartet will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Memorial Auditorium in Dawson. This concert will also include brief performances by four Dawson-Boyd High School student string quartets. The students have worked with members of the Artaria String Quartet during the past months as part of a project designed to enhance chamber music.
The Artaria String Quartet is named after the Italian family that published the premier issues of many of the Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart quartets. The quartet, based in Saint Paul, has "impressive" international credentials and is committed to a strong education program that includes a chamber music school, a summer string program and a high school chamber music competition.
This concert and student residency is possible because of the successful concert in the Dawson-Boyd Arts Association's 2007 season when violinist Midori and pianist Robert McDonald played a recital through the Partners in Performance program, an outreach program dedicated to keeping chamber music alive in small communities in America.
Exhibiting in the lobby that evening will be artist Cat Abbott.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students; call the box office at 320-769-2955 ext. 246 or visit the Web site at www.dawsonboydarts.org.
