Atwater to host Tournament of Duty
ATWATER -- Four members of the U.S. Paralympic Volleyball team and their coaches, and a Minnesota recipient of the 2013 American Red Cross hero award are among those coming to the Tournament of Duty event on Saturday at Homer Bach Field and Island Pine Golf Course in Atwater.
The event is a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project, which assists military veterans recovering from injuries.
A golf tournament begins at 11 a.m. and volleyball play and other activities at the city park start at noon.
Head Coach Bill Hamiter and Cara Lang, assistant coach, will be leading the members of the USA Paralympics women's sitting volleyball team to Atwater for the event.
Also coming to support the event is Brian Saaristo, a Barnum native who was honored as a one of 10 Northland heroes for going beyond the call of duty by the American Red Cross in 2013. Saaristo lost both of his legs below the knees while serving in Iraq in 2006. He has since made a reputation as a golfer.
He will be joined by Denis Oliverio, a veteran injured in Iraq who is now active with the Wounded Warrior Project.
There will be food and refreshments on site, opportunities to play in the events, and a silent auction.
