Atwater spoils Rails' home, season opener
WILLMAR — Atwater broke open a tie game with a three-run seventh inning and defeated the Willmar Rails 5-2 in a non-league amateur baseball game Wednesday at Bill Taunton Stadium.
The teams were tied 2-2 in the top of the seventh when Brian Kingery singled and JaColby Anderson hit a fly ball that the Rails outfield lost above the lights. The ball fell for a double and Kingery scored.
The Chuckers’ Matt Lilleberg followed with a run-scoring double to the fence and Brooks Maurer singled in Lilleberg to make it 5-2.
Kingery scattered nine hits, allowing two earned runs and striking out eight, to earned the complete-game victory.
Kingery had two hits, drove in a run and scored twice and Anderson also had a pair of hits and drove in a run.
The Rails’ Tyler Brower, Jordan Olson and Josh Oestreich all had two hits and Olson and Oestreich drove in Willmar’s runs.
Matt Stock tripled and scored two runs. Olson worked into the seventh inning and took the loss.
The Rails play at Milroy in a Cornbelt League game at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The Chuckers also play Sunday, a County Line League game at Norway Lake-Sunburg starting at 1:30 p.m.
