WILLMAR — Augustine Hahn  threw three touchdown passes in the first half and ran for another as the Willmar Cardinals cruised by winless Grand Rapids 45-0 on a mild Friday evening watched by 1,362 fans at Hodapp Field.

Hahn had completed 11 of 13 throws — the last 9 in a row — by halftime for 214 yards. At the break Willmar led 36-0. The second half was running time.

A teammate watching Hahn’s mobility and accurate arm suggested RG III for a nickname. Someone countered, “How about Auggie Football?”

The offense put up more than 40 points for the third time in four games.

The defense has allowed one score on the last two Fridays.

Willmar outgained the visitors from the north (a 212 mile bus trip) 427 to 82 yards.

The defense, led by linebacker Vaughn Johnson’s 14 stops, supplied an interception by Colten Carlson and a fumble recovery by Buzzy Tollefson, plus Hunter Mottinger blocked a punt recovered by Zac Rudolph to set up a short field, all in the first half.

The most eye-catching moments the first half were provided by a wide-open tight end Adam Nibaur, who caught a sideline pass from Hahn in full stride on a 60-yard hook-up and a 12-0 lead. Nibaur later made a leaping sideline catch for a first down in front of the Cardinal bench. Willmar’s third touchdown was a fine catch by Chris Cunningham in the corner of the end zone for an 18-0 Willmar lead a minute into the second quarter.

The second string played a lot of the second half.

It was the first meeting of the two schools in football. Grand Rapids, Bemidji and Moorhead joined CLC football this fall and were all placed in the North Division.

Willmar goes to 3-1 overall and remains 2-0 against South Division opponents. The W-L record versus division opponents will determine the champions in each division, not the overall record as erroneously stated by this writer earlier.

Willmar is at the Alexandria homecoming at 3 p.m. next Saturday.
