ALEXANDRIA, Minn. --  Two people involved in a shootout with a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy before they were found dead near here on Monday were from Fargo, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner said.

Katie Ray Christopherson, 29, and Devin Blowers, 24, both died of gunshot wounds, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said in a release.

The last known addresses for Christopherson and Blowers were in Fargo.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner has ruled Blowers' death a suicide by gunshot and Christopherson’s death was ruled a homicide.

BCA investigators believe Blowers shot Christopherson, then himself.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident. According to the preliminary investigation, at 9:51 p.m. Monday, Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy Dustin Alexander responded to the scene of a suspicious vehicle, just southeast of Alexandria.  Alexander obtained identification from Christopherson and Blowers and briefly returned to his squad.

When Alexander returned to the vehicle a second time, Blowers shot the deputy in the chest, striking him in his a bullet-resistant vest. Alexander returned fire. The suspects drove off, but became stuck in the snow approximately 50 to 60 yards away. Both then fled on foot.

About four hours later, law enforcement located Christopherson and Blowers dead near an outbuilding on the property. A handgun and a shotgun were located near the deceased.

Alexander was treated at Douglas County Hospital and released. Alexander has been with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for three years and is a member of the Douglas County SWAT team. He is on standard administrative leave.
