Auto Racing: Nelson Nationals this weekend

Tribune photo by Rand Middleton Repeat Mod-4 track champ Dustin Zieske (24) held off Kyle Thell (00) for first place by just two points, though rain denied the Foley pilot a last chance to overtake the Willmar driver when the final night of racing was rained out.

WILLMAR — The KRA Speedway will honor the memory of Charlie Nelson, the race-driver’s friend, during the two-day Fall Festival that wraps up the racing season at the fairgrounds.

The Charlie Nelson Nationals will award Wissota National points both Friday and Saturday.

All seven KRA classes will run heats and features each night (Hornets are feature only on Friday).

Green flag waves at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The grandstand is $15 each day; pit passes $30 each day.

Nelson, 78, passed away suddenly July 12 at his home two blocks from the track. He was a fixture around the track beginning in the 1950s. His oversized home-made trophies with ornaments and plaques supplied by Willmar Trophy Shop remain part of his legacy.
