Awale finished in 16:00.4, a blink in front of Ryan Little of Eden Prairie in 16:00.6. Two seconds separated the first four finishers in the electrifying finish.

Awale led five Cardinals in the top 18 in a field of 128 runners. It was the third Invitational win for the No. 1-ranked Cardinals and the most significant since it came in a head-to-head combat with No. 2 Eden Prairie.

Willmar finished with 49 points and runner-up Eden Prairie 72 among 19 teams.

The Willmar girls had a good outing finishing seventh among 21 complete teams. Eighth-grader Jayne Cole finished 34th (16:42.5) and senior Rachael Nelson 43rd (16:59.5).

This was the fourth invitational for the Willmar boys. Awale and teammate Kaafi Adeys have each won twice. Adeys, also a junior, led through the first mile. He would finish sixth in 16:26.6. Mohamed Bedel was 12th in 16:52.8, Mike Switzer 14th in 16:55.5, Dustin Geselius 16th in 17:03, Mustafa Yusuf 18th in 17:05 and Paul Kimpling 39th in 17:39.4.

The Willmar girls tied with Lakeville South, each with 249 points, but were award seventh on a better tiebreaking sixth time. After Cole and Nelson, the Cards crossed the line in a pack: Brin Hanson was 53rd in 17:08, Danielle Erickson 59th in 17:13, Laura Torgerson 60th in 17:15 and Britta Pederson 61st in 17:16. Katie Holmgren finished in 17:51.

Next for Willmar is the Cardinals' invitational at 1 p.m. Saturday at Eagle Creek.
