Bail set at $1.5 million for Diaz Evans, charged with attempted murder for shooting at cop

WILLMAR -- Unconditional bail was set at $1.5 million for Leroy Diaz Evans, the man who faces a charge of first-degree attempted murder of a peace officer for allegedly shooting at a Willmar police officer.

The bail was set during Evans' first appearance this morning in Kandiyohi County District Court. Evans, 26, of Willmar, also faces five first-degree burglary charges for two alleged home invasions that led up to the Wednesday evening shooting along the 800 block of Second Street Southeast.

Bail was set at $800,000 for Jesus Trevino, 33, and Arcadio Salinas Jr., 23, of Willmar. Trevino faces one charge of aiding and abetting first-degree attempted murder of a peace officer and five first-degree burglary charges. Salinas and Adrian Salinas, 20, both face charges of aiding and abetting first-degree murder of a peace officer. Unconditional bail was set at $750,000 for Adrian Salinas. No conditional bail was set for any of the men.

Assistant Kandiyohi County Attorney Shane Baker requested $2 million bail for Evans and $1 million for each of the other three defendants during their hearings.

Judge Donald M. Spilseth reviewed Evans' criminal history, which includes five executed prison sentences for assault and riot in the past eight years.

"(You) have a history of extreme violence," Spilseth said before setting the bail. "I have no alternative but to set a high bail to protect public safety."

Each of the four defendants faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted of the charge of first-degree attempted murder of a police officer.
