Baseball Playoffs: Paynesville dumps Lakers from 5AA
DELANO — The Bulldogs almost dozed off with an 8-1 when Howard Lake/Waverly-Winsted came roaring back to close to 8-7.
The West No. 5 has now knocked off teams seeded 1, 3 and 4, around a 3-1 loss to Litchfield.
Paynesville was playing a third day in a row. Next for the Bulldogs (back at Delano) is the winner of The Breck School and Providence Academy.
Starter Mitch Weidner had tamed the Lakers on just a couple of hits through four innings, but the Lakers scored two in the fifth and four more in the sixth off Weidner and reliever Jordan Roos.
Trent Gertkin, Blake Karsch and Nick Dingman each had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs, now 15-7.

The BOLD Warriors began their long road back through the Section 2A elimination bracket with a 10-0 win over Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity in six innings at Lions Memorial Park on Thursday.
The Warriors’ next hurdle is Saturday at Mankato’s Franklin Park, a 5 p.m. start.
Logan Sandgren homered and threw five innings of no-hit baseball with four walks and nine Ks.
Trevor Nissen doubled twice and knocked in three runs.
Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s tripped the defending state champions 4-1 on Tuesday.

Bryce Jergenson’s no-out single in the bottom of the eighth at Legion Field drove home Joey Dufault with the tying run and Nathan Anderson with the game-ender as the Morris/Chokio-Alberta Tigers shaded St. James 7-6 on Thursday.
Jergenson, a senior, also pitched all eight innings for the win.
The Tigers needed a dramatic two-out double by Corey Storck to tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh.
St. James scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth to go in front 6-4. In the bottom of the inning, a hit batter with the bases soaked made it 6-5, setting the stage for Jergenson’s decider.
Riley Biesterfield’s homer in the fifth was the Tigers’ first run. Morris/CA outhit St. James 10 to 6.
The win put the Tigers in the final four against host Marshall on Saturday; Luverne and Fairmont play are in the winners’ bracket final.

New London-Spicer fell behind big early and couldn’t dent two Tigers pitchers in a Section 3AA losers bracket game on Thursday.
Ryan Vraa doubled twice and drive in a run and Trey Austvold, Ike Goetzman and Lucas Nordmeyer all had two hits, with Arnold and Goetzman also driving in runs.
The Wildcats finished the season 9-11.

MACCRAY’s victory on Thursday moves the Wolverines into the losers bracket final in Section 3A against the winner of Lakeview and Wabasso at 2 p.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart.
Wabasso and Lakeview were tied 1-1 in the 11th inning when this edition of the Tribune went to press.
