Bauman lifts KMS past D-B

DAWSON -- It's a wonder there's any sod left on Dawson-Boyd's football field after the way Joel Bauman chewed up yardage on Saturday.

The workhorse junior running back took over the area rushing lead by carrying 36 times for 370 yards and three touchdowns as Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg defeated Dawson-Boyd 24-21 in the Section 3A semifinals.

KMS (8-2), the No. 3 seed, will now play No. Minneota (9-1) in the final at 5 p.m. Friday at Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall.

KMS and Dawson-Boyd exchanged leads four times before Bauman's 31-yard touchdown run with 11:52 left in the game capped the scoring. Bauman also scored on runs of 10 and 14 yards during the Fighting Saints' 17-point second quarter in which Andres Rojas also booted a 28-yard field goal.

It was the sixth meeting between the teams in the postseason in the last eight years. KMS has now won five of those.

Jake Armstrong sparked the KMS defense with three interceptions, all coming in the fourth quarter.

Dawson-Boyd (7-3) opened the scoring with a 13-play, 56-yard drive that was capped by junior halfback Matt Anderson's four-yard touchdown run and Ryan Swenson's conversion kick for a 7-0 lead.

The Blackjacks appeared headed for another score before coughing up the ball on a pitch that was recovered by KMS's Adam Wentzel at the Saints' 18. Bauman ran for 20 yards on the first play, then scampered off tackle for 53 yards to the Blackjacks' nine. On the next play, Bauman reached paydirt standing up and Rojas' kick tied the game at 7.

Dawson-Boyd then went three-and-out and punted on its ensuing drive, giving KMS the ball on its own 36. The Saints needed only four plays to score again with Bauman toting the ball each time on runs of 17, 10 and 22 yards before scoring from 14 yards out.

KMS quickly got the ball back following an interception by Aaron Zimmer at its own 25 with less than a minute remaining in the half. The Saints went 61 yards in 27 seconds on Bauman runs of 29 and 17 yards and a 26-yard diving reception by Zimmer on a pass from Kevin Steinhaus. That set up the Rojas field goal.

"Our guys have really been doing the job up front the last four or five weeks," said KMS coach James Cortez. "They've been opening some huge holes. Bauman hardly even got touched on a lot of his runs."

Dawson-Boyd took advantage of consecutive KMS turnovers in the second half to take the lead back. Jake Bothun recovered a fumbled punt at the KMS 11, and three plays later, Anderson scored on a three-yard run.

After the ensuing kickoff, KMS fumbled its first play from scrimmage and Jarrett Wager recovered at the KMS 37. Facing fourth-and-5 at the five, the Blackjacks elected to go for the touchdown and the lead instead of a field goal to tie the game. Swenson, a sophomore quarterback, then found Bothun all alone in the end zone for a touchdown and Swenson's conversion kick gave them a 24-21 lead.

KMS put together a five-play, 57-yard drive early in the final quarter for the final score of the game. Bauman again had his number called on every play, including the 32-yard TD.

Bauman now has 1,902 yards rushing this season, overtaking Anderson for the area lead. He also had runs of 30 and 25 yards called back on KMS holding penalties in the fourth quarter. And he returned two kickoffs for 72 yards.

"(Bauman) had a great game," said Cortez. "Most of his runs were off tackle and once he broke it outside, he had some big runs."

Anderson finished the game with 138 yards and the season with 1,740 yards.
