BBE wins Willmar Volleyball Tourney title

WILLMAR -- In the strongest field since the inception of the Willmar Volleyball Invitational in 1997, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars repeated as champions on Saturday, topping New London-Spicer 25-23, 25-11 in the championship.

Led by 5-11 senior middle hitter Heidi Lensing, who is arguably the area's top hitter, the Jaguars improved to 21-1 on the season. Lensing blistered four opponents with a total of 38 kills and an impressive .315 kill percentage despite often facing double-blocks. She also had eight ace blocks.

Seven of the eight teams in the field entered with winning records and the lone team that was below .500, Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, was very competitive in all four of its matches.

Benson (15-6) topped Sibley East (15-9) 15-25, 25-18, 15-11 for third place. Breckenridge (17-7) defeated Renville County West (11-8) for fifth place and Willmar (12-8) held off ACGC (6-16) in the seventh-place match.

BBE ruled the court with pool-play sweeps of Willmar, Benson and Breckenridge.

NLS, with the youngest team in the field, defeated RCW, Sibley East and

ACGC in its pool matches.

The Wildcats stayed with BBE in the first game of the championship match. Tied 23-23, BBE took a 24-23 lead on a cross-court kill by Emily Roelike, who then served the winning point on a thunderous kill down the middle by Lensing.

BBE took the momentum and ran with it in the second game, bolting to a 9-1 lead and never looking back.

Roelike finished with 16 kills and a team-high 31 digs for the Jaguars. Rachel Anderson had 13 kills and five ace blocks, Maggie Gruber and Jenny Hiserich had four ace serves apiece, and setters Julkie Hieserich and Whitney Bertram finished with 57 and 24 assists, respectively.

For NLS, Taylor Thompsen pounded down 21 kills and also had a team-high 32 digs to go along with five ace blocks and three ace serves. Karli Wendlandt delivered 16 kills and five ace serves, and Brianna Jacobson 14 kills and five ace blocks. Justine Dammermann was credited with 57 assists.

Jenny Bouta had 29 kills for Benson. Kayla Hamptson added 27 kills and Taylor Semler 20. Hampton and Mallory Jensen had five ace serves each. Emily Auch led in digs with 28.

Willmar went 2-2 in the tournament. Jena Thompson had a strong tournament for the Cardinals with 28 kills and a .356 kill perfentage. Alex Lippert notched 11 ace blocks for the Cardinals. Emily Nelsen chalked up 18 kills and five ace serves and Hannah Smith had 53 assists, 11 kills and five ace serves, Kelsey Evans chalked up 24 kills and had 33 digs, Brittney Hastad led the team defensively with 38 digs and Jennie Mattison contributed 49 assists.
