Benson residents urged to report suspicious activity after garage burglaries
BENSON -- The Benson Police Department reminds residents to lock their doors and windows before going to bed, leave a light on in the house during the night and take the keys out of your car, even if it is in the garage.
Police chief Jim Crace reports an increase in burglaries and thefts in the city. In many of these cases, garages have been entered and gas cans have been stolen. In others, gas cans have been stolen from boats that have been parked on the street and/or gas has been siphoned from a vehicle.
The burglaries and thefts come at a time when law enforcement in the region are investigating nighttime burglaries in Belgrade, Kandiyohi, Lake Lillian, Pennock, Montevideo and Clara City. In most cases, the suspects entered through attached garages or unlocked windows and doors. The burglaries occur at night while the homeowners are in the residence sleeping. The most commonly stolen items in these cases have been purses and wallets.
Crace urges citizens to report all suspicious activity to law enforcement when is happens.
"You know your neighborhood; if something doesn't look right to you, it probably isn't. In these cases, call us so we can respond and check things out" he said. "By reporting suspicious activity as it occurs, you will help us catch these suspects in the act."
