Benson/KMs blanks Worthington in state tennis opener

MINNEAPOLIS -- Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg established their superiority in Southwestern Minnesota tennis on Tuesday.

The BraveSaints trounced Worthington, the Section 3A champs, 7-0 in the Class A quarterfinals at Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in South Minneapolis.

This morning, at 8 a.m., the Section 6A champions meet Breck in the semifinals. The Mustangs, out of Section 5A, are unofficial kings of the Metro after knocking off rival Blake 4-3 in the semifinals.

BKMS is the only public school left in the championship bracket. Rochester Lourdes and Holy Family Catholic of Victoria meet at 10 a.m.

There were some close matches against the Trojans but all went the way of BKMS, now 21-2.

The 1-singles match needed three sets before Ben Murphy could put away Adam Vosburgh 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. Ethan Ratliff-Crain won 4-singles 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. At 2-doubles, Ahren Bachman-Brandon Edlund scrambled to a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

The Mustangs, who won third place at state in 2008, went to the wire with Blake before their 3-doubles team prevailed 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).

Breck swept all the individual honors in Section 5A, which includes Litchfield. The Mustangs will have two singles and two doubles teams in the individual tournament that starts on Thursday.

Murphy and James will compete as a doubles team for BKMS.

Breck has won four Class titles, the most recent in 2001. Benson is making its fifth state appearance, the last came in 2000.
