Berdelia M. McGaffey Oct. 22, 1919 - April 20, 2009
BIRD ISLAND -- Berdelia M. McGaffey, 89, of Buffalo, formerly of Bird Island, died Monday at Sunrise Cottages in Buffalo.
The service will be at 1:15 p.m. Friday at St Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Bird Island.
She was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Mahnomen to Albert and Teresa (Neubauer) Tersteeg. She grew up and attended school in Mahnomen.
She married Harold Wittenberg on Feb. 5, 1940, in Bird Island. They farmed for many years near Hector and later moved to the Minneapolis suburbs.
She married Clyde "Joe" McGaffey on Aug. 14, 1971, in Buffalo. They first lived in Buffalo and then moved to Bird Island for many years. They returned to Buffalo in 2004. Most recently she lived at Sunrise Cottages in Buffalo.
She is survived by five children: Susan (and Sam) Heinecke of Big Lake, Linda Wittenberg of Olivia, Patricia (and Craig) Walls of Kamiah, Idaho, Roxann (and Kelly) Brynestad of Buffalo, and Cindy (and Doug) Holland of Silver Creek; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Cecelia Hassett and Amelia Empey; and one brother: Harold Tersteeg.
She was preceded in death by her husbands: Harold in 1969 and Joe in 2007; two sons: James Wittenberg and Donald Wittenberg; an infant granddaughter; and two brothers.
