Citizens will be voting on election races from president down to township officers and soil and water conservation supervisors.

We encourage every eligible citizen to go to the polls and cast a ballot. If you are not registered, you can still register today with appropriate identification and proof of residence.

For candidate information, we encourage you to visit: www.wctrib.com/voterguide.

Our online voter guide includes more than 200 races and more than 500 candidates from across west central Minnesota.

If you need assistance finding your polling place, call your city clerk or county auditor. Further information can be found at the Secretary of State's Web site: www.sos.state.mn.us

You can get local results Tuesday night as they become available on our Web site: www.wctrib.com.

Your vote is critical in this and every election. Here are just a few examples:

- In 2004, George Bush defeated John Kerry 51 to 49 percent in Ohio to win re-election.

- In 2002, one Minnesota legislative race was decided by 257 votes.

- In 2000, George Bush defeated Al Gore by 537 votes in Florida to win the presidential election.

- In 1960, John Kennedy's victory over Richard Nixon was decided by one-half of a vote per precinct nationwide.

Finally, every year there is often a local race that ends in a tie.

The majority of Minnesota's polls open at 7 a.m. today and all will close at 8 p.m.

To every citizen voting today, we thank you on behalf of America. The investment of your time and your vote are critical to our country's democracy.
