NEW LONDON — A group of bicyclists will be touring the area over the Labor Day weekend from their base at Sibley State Park.

Participants in the Parks and Trails Council of Minnesota’s ninth annual Bike Minnesota tour will be visiting Sunburg, Spicer, New London, Paynesville and Willmar during rides on Saturday through Monday, according to information on the Parks and Trails Council website. Former U.S. Representative and retired Minnesota Court of Appeals Judge David Minge will lead the tour.

Arriving at Sibley on Friday evening, the group will ride 60 miles a day Saturday and Sunday and 30 on Monday.

On their ride Saturday to Sunburg, cyclists will see a threshing machine display, visit the Old Log Church and learn about events during the U.S.-Dakota War on the Isle of Refuge in Norway Lake.

Spicer will be first on the riders’ schedule Sunday. Then they will pedal around Green Lake and head to the county park on Lake Koronis. From there, they will head to Paynesville and take the Glacial Lakes State Trail back to Sibley.

In Willmar on Monday, the group will visit the Kandiyohi County Historical Society Museum, Robbins Island and, on the way back to Sibley, stop at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center.

The state Transportation Department has asked area motorists to slow down and watch for the cyclists, particularly on Saturday on state Highway 9, which they will be using on their tour of the Sunburg area.

The Parks and Trails Council of Minnesota is a grassroots organization. Its mission is to acquire, protect and enhance critical lands for public use and benefit.
