The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office said the accident happened at 9:12 a.m. when a motorist allegedly failed to stop at the intersection of County Road 16 and 293rd Avenue, about two miles north of Paynesville.

The bike rider, 55-year-old Gerald Johnson of Bemidji, received medical treatment at the scene and was then airlifted to the St. Cloud Hospital by Life Link, the sheriff’s office said. Johnson was on his second day of the Bicycle Around Minnesota tour, biking from Albany to Spicer.

Johnson is the former police chief of Bemidji.

The sheriff’s office identified the driver of the car as Josie Magnan, 22, of Grove City. She was treated at the scene.

Along with the sheriff’s office and Life Link, the Paynesville Ambulance and Paynesville Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.
