Bikers staying in Spicer this weekend
WILLMAR — The annual Bicycling Around Minnesota event is Thursday through Sunday, and starts and ends in Cold Spring with stops in Albany, Spicer and Hutchinson.
The ride is from Cold Spring to Albany on Thursday, Albany to Spicer on Friday, Spicer to Hutchinson on Saturday and Hutchinson to Cold Spring on Sunday.
The estimated 275 BAM riders will arrive in Spicer early in the afternoon on Friday, according to Beth Fischer, executive director of the Willmar Lakes Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The riders will camp at the Prairie Meadows school or will stay at local lodging locations and the CVB has arranged shuttle service to take them to Glacial Ridge Winery and to New London, for shopping, the arts festival and for a Little Crow Ski show.
The group will leave Spicer Saturday morning.
MnDOT is asking all travelers to watch for bicyclists, as they will use trunk highways, local routes and bicycle paths as their BAM routes.
MnDOT officials remind that there are rules of the road to improve bicycle safety, including that bicyclists should ride on the road with traffic, obey all traffic signals and rules, signal their turns and ride in a predictable manner, and that motorists should give a 3-foot clearance when passing a bicyclist. Both motorists and bicyclists must yield the right of way to each other and bicyclists should wear helmets and reflective gear and headlights and reflectors in the dark.
