Bird Island man charged with assault for alleged stabbing at Spicer home
WILLMAR -- Michael Jon Underland, 28, of Bird Island, made his first court appearance Wednesday on a second-degree assault charge for allegedly stabbing a man in the abdomen on Feb. 5 at a rural Spicer residence.
Unconditional bail was set at $80,000. Underland's next appearance is Feb. 27.
According to court documents, Underland was arrested and taken to the Kandiyohi County Jail one day after the incident.
He complained of abdominal pain and was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital, where he told staff that he had ingested about 20 ounces of antifreeze before his arrest.
He was then taken to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment. District Judge David L. Mennis granted an enlargement of time motion -- a delay in the case -- on Feb. 8.
According to the complaint, the investigation began when county dispatch re-ceived a call that a woman was driving to Rice Hospital transporting a man who had been stabbed at an after-bar party.
A sheriff's deputy located the man in the emergency room, with one stab wound that required surgery.
The man said he had gone to a home along 97th Avenue Northeast after bar closing time, that he and Underland had argued on and off and that Underland had threatened him and brandished a pocket knife.
The man had taken away that knife, but later argued more with Underland, who then stabbed him with another knife.
The woman and another witness reported they had observed Underland and the man argue and that they saw Underland stab the man.
