Bird Island, Minn., man guilty in stabbing case
WILLMAR — A District Court jury found Michael Jon Underland, 29, of Bird Island, guilty Tuesday of second- and third-degree assault for stabbing a man in the abdomen in February 2012 at a rural Spicer residence.
The verdicts came after a one-day jury trial before District Judge Donald M. Spilseth in Kandiyohi County District Court. Underland was ordered held in the Kandiyohi County Jail until his March 11 sentencing.
The charges were filed after Feb. 5, 2012, when county dispatch received a call that a woman was driving to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, transporting a man who had been stabbed at a party.
A sheriff’s deputy located the man in the emergency room. He had suffered a single stab wound that required surgery.
The man said he had gone to a home along 97th Avenue Northeast after the bar closed. He said he and Underland argued on and off and that Underland threatened him and brandished a pocket knife.
The man said he took the knife from Underland.
He said he had another argument with Underland some time later, at which point Underland stabbed him with a different knife.
The woman who drove the man to the hospital and another person reported witnessing the argument and Underland stabbing the man.
