Blizzard conditions expected in west central Minn. this afternoon

A major winter storm is bearing down on west central Minnesota today.

Blizzard conditions are expect across western Minnesota this afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen.

Snow will continue this morning, heavy at times, and into the afternoon. Snow accumulations will reach 7 to 11 inches.

The blizzard warning remains in effect for Sunday afternoon due to the combination of moderate to heavy snowfall and strong northwest winds between 20 and 40 mph. Some wind gusts are expected to reach 40 mph this afternoon and evening.

Consideral blowing and drifting snow will result in white conditions with near zero visibility this afternoon making travel nearly impossible.

Temperatures are expected in the 20s, before plunging to single digits by later afternoon. Overnight lows will drop to 5 to 10 below. Wind chills will be 15 to 25 below.

Travel will be very difficult and strangded motorists risk frostbit or hypothermia due to the frigid wind chill this evening and tonight. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.
