A blizzard warning will remain in effect for southern and western Minnesota until noon Monday.

The National Weather Service said 5 to 8 inches of snow fell in just a few hours this morning in south central Minnesota, including the cities of Owatonna, Albert Lea, Mankato and New Ulm. The heavy snow was spreading north and expanding to the Twin Cities metro area, Hutchinson, Willmar and Montevideo.

The blizzard warning has been issued for areas west of a line from Alexandria to Willmar and New Ulm.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for the remainder of the southern half of Minnesota and portions of central Minnesota, as well as west central Wisconsin, until noon Monday. These areas could see snow accumulations of 6 inches or more.

Northeast winds are increasing this afternoon, causing blizzard conditions across much of west central Minnesota.

The heaviest snowfall will be in the 10- to 15-inch range from west central Minnesota around Montevideo and toward the Twin Cities.

The National Weather Service said this blast of wintry weather is due to a strong low-pressure area moving from southeast Nebraska to central Iowa this evening and into northern Illinois later tonight.
