WILLMAR — Three-foot snowdrifts and whiteout conditions are forecast Wednesday afternoon and evening for much of western and southern Minnesota.

The National Weather Service Twin Cities office in Chanhassen has issued a blizzard warning beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Willmar, Olivia, Benson, Litchfield and Redwood Falls are among the areas in the blizzard warning.

Visibility could be a quarter-mile or less, and whiteout conditions are expected at times. Winds from the northwest will be 25 to 35 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph.

The Weather Service says widespread blowing snow will lead to large drifts over roadways. Due to the deep snow pack, some drifts may exceed 3 feet in open areas, making travel nearly impossible.

Stevens, Lac qui Parle and Yellow Medicine counties, including the cities of Morris, Madison and Granite Falls, are in a winter weather advisory. The Weather Service says wind speeds will be similar to those in the warning area, and blowing and drifting snow are forecast. Visibility of one mile or less is expected.
