Blizzard watch for some west central Minnesota counties Sunday; blizzard warning in northwest MN and eastern ND

A blizzard warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, N.D., for all of eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota - with conditions predicted to worsen today and into Sunday.

A blizzard watch has been issued by the National Weather Service in Minneapolis for Yellow Medicine, Lac qui Parle, Stevens, Pope and Swift counties from early Sunday through late Sunday night. A winter storm watch is in effect for the rest of the Willmar region from early Sunday through late Sunday night.

The Willmar region has a slight chance of light freezing rain in the evening. Then a chance of light freezing rain and snow after midnight.

Sunday will have wind with areas of blowing and drifting snow. Snow accumulation of 4 to 6 inches.

The weather service said a "major winter storm" will bring blizzard conditions into the Red River Valley region beginning tonight, spreading heavy snow, strong winds, bitter cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills.

Blizzard conditions in the Red River Valley are expected into Sunday night, the weather service said.

Snow is likely to appear in Fargo and Grand Forks, mainly after 3 p.m. today, the weather service said. The area can expect blustery winds today, with gusts up to 29 mph.
